The countdown to elections of ward committee has begun

Residents are urged to look out for dates and venues of elections in their respective wards.

The City of Ekurhuleni reminds residents that the elections of ward committee members are set for March 28.

The City has in the past week been busy with the ward committees’ nomination processes, which ended on March 11.
The next phase of the process of establishing ward committees is the elections of the members, which will run from March 28 to April 30.

The City’s ward committee policy under its election procedure states that the election of ward committees shall take place on a sector basis. A maximum of 10 sectors can be represented in a ward committee.

The following portfolios shall be reflected in ward committees:
Women and Children; Aged and Disability; Faith-based Organisations; Youth, Environmental Development; Infrastructure Services; Economic Planning and City Planning; Health and & Social Development; Sports, Heritage; Recreation and Culture; and Community Safety.

The Speaker of Council, Raymond Dhlamini, encourages maximum participation from communities in this process.

“Advancing social change through service delivery is our responsibility as government. Structures like ward committees ensure the expansion of our constitutional democracy is safeguarded by our citizens. We must never lose the voice of our communities and representation through sectors in these ward committees is elemental in capturing the diversity of interests.”

Residents are urged to look out for dates and venues of elections in their respective wards on all library, clinic and Customer Care Centre notice boards and on all City of Ekurhuleni social media platforms.

City of Ekurhuleni Legislature spokesperson Sphelele Nxele said: “Central to the development of participatory democracy at local government level is a need to observe governance values in the establishment of democratically representative structures.
“Ward committees aid council to better run the City by focusing on providing ward-based interventions and empower communities by giving them a platform to have a say in how their wards are run.”
