Surprise raids on schools unearth dagga, weapons

Learners who witness or have witnessed someone bringing drugs or weapons to school, are encouraged to report such people to the school or police.

The Boksburg police waged war on drugs in local schools on March 15.

The surprise search operation by members of the SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic Department, local security companies, and representatives of the Gauteng Community Safety as well as the Department of Education, saw the team descending on Boksburg and Sunward Park high schools.

According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Ntsako Ledwaba, nine packets of dagga, two knives and flavoured tobacco normally used with hubble-bubble were found at Sunward Park High. The learners involved are facing disciplinary actions.

Police found nothing on the Boksburg High premises.

Ledwaba admitted that some people have raised concerns about alleged drug abuse and the carrying of illegal and dangerous weapons in schools.

“As part of our school safety programme aimed at making schools safer, we have organised random school search operations and carried out an intelligence-driven investigation to find those who sell drugs to the youngsters.

“We are calling on members of the public to report anyone who deals in drugs or distribute drugs among our schools. The learners themselves, who witness or have witnessed someone bringing drugs or weapons to school, are also encouraged to report such people to the school or police,” said Ledwaba.

Ledwaba acknowledged that some of these social issues are complex and that a single organisation can’t bring about solutions. She, therefore, called upon all stakeholders, including parents and teachers, to play their role.
