Residents of Comet are still forced to put up with the recurring raw sewage spill caused by a damaged sewer line located outside a residential complex.
It seems the metro is still battling to find a permanent solution to the problem.
The damaged sewer line, outside Golden Oaks complex in Comet, was initially reported early in March after it started sending gallons of litres of raw sewage onto the roads and into the nearby homes.
At the time, the water and sanitation department sent out its crews to attend to the issue; however, the unstableness of the ground impeded the progress of the work to repair the collapsed sewer pipe.
Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini told the Advertiser that whilst workers were excavating to expose the damaged pipe, the sidewalls of the excavation kept caving in and posed serious safety risks for the workers on site, hence all construction had to be halted.

Dlamini said due to the unsafe conditions, the department would be re-routing the sewer pipeline.
However, the department’s interventions seem to have failed to permanently address the spillage, as the problem resurfaced after a few days, according to residents.
Late in March, the complex’s managing agent reported the drains are again blocked and pushing up into residents’ homes.
An official from the Department of Water and Sanitation responded to the complainant’s email, saying they would send the team back to investigate and the department would rely on the report received to guide the metro’s next steps.
“Please note it is definitely the department’s aim to find a permanent solution,” responded the official.
