Be wary of smash-and-grabs in Boksburg – police

Main Reef and Field roads in Angelo informal settlement, have been identified as the most notorious spots for smash-and-grabs

egal mining smash-and-grabAs smash-and-grab incidents remain a growing problem in town, Boksburg police have urged motorists to practise caution and be vigilant on the road, especially when entering the known smash-and-grab hot spots during the night.

The traffic lights at the intersection on Pretoria and Rondebult in Comet, and the intersection of Main Reef and Field roads in Angelo informal settlement, have been identified as the most notorious spots for smash-and-grabs or theft out of motor vehicles within the Boksburg SAPS policing precinct.

FILE PHOTO: This intersection of Main Reef and Field roads has been identified as one of the most dangerous spots for drivers travelling along the area, during the night in particular.

One such case was reported on April 13. The victim explained to police she had stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of Pretoria and Rondebult roads just after 20:00 when suddenly the window of her bakkie, a Ford Ranger, was smashed and her cellphone taken.
She identified the predator as an unknown black male, who after committing the crime ran away.

Police reports show that dozens of motorists have had the windows of their vehicles smashed by thieves at the identified hot spots, and this long-standing problem happens regularly in these areas.

Police urged drivers to help prevent these incidents by not placing any valuable items, such as cellphones, handbags, laptops and other valuable items, on the seats or in view inside the vehicle, where they are easily seen, as this attracts would-be-criminals.
Police added they often deploy patrollers to the known hot spots, but motorists too are urged to keep their wits about them and remain security conscious when driving in the hot spots.

Known smash-and-grab hot spots:
• At the traffic light on Rondebult and Pretoria roads in Comet
• The intersection of Main Reef and Field roads in Angelo informal settlement
• The intersection of Commissioner Street and Atlas Road
