The Public Servants Association (PSA) condemns the “senseless and barbaric” killing of the two Boksburg community correctional officers.
The officers, identified as Faku and Moliki, were reportedly shot dead on July 12 in Duduza while tracing a parolee who absconded. The Department of Correctional (DCS) Services confirmed the shooting.
The PSA, which represents more than 14 000 employees at the department, urges Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola to prioritise the safety of correctional officials by ensuring the DCS is adequately resourced in terms of staff and equipment required to carry out duties.
“Lawlessness in the country has reached unprecedented levels where law enforcement officers are no longer feared by criminals.
“The situation is worsened by severe staff shortages in the DCS and the leniency of the system to offer unmerited parole to unworthy offenders,” said the union in a statement.
PSA said it was informed of the shortage of batons and safety vests, which further exposes the employees to risks.
“It is well documented that DCS is severely understaffed, which is contributing to ongoing violent attacks on correctional officers by inmates.
“The PSA cannot stand by and see that these employees are attacked when DCS is doing nothing to ensure that its establishment is strengthened and that correctional officers are equipped with the required safety equipment.”
The union also appeals to law authorities to ensure that those responsible for this killing are brought to book and receive a harsh punishment to deter such behaviour.
The PSA sends heartfelt condolences to the families and colleagues of the officers.
