NSPCA working hard to win crocodile abuse case
It is important to remember that all animals, including crocodiles, are sentient beings.
The National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) is committed to protecting all animals, no matter their species.
This is why the NSPCA remains dedicated to winning its case against the owner and employees of a crocodile farm in Limpopo.
According to NSPCA public relations officer Keshvi Nair, in 2021, they received reports of severe animal cruelty occurring at the farm and wasted no time sending a team of inspectors to investigate.
Upon investigation, it horrified inspectors to find carcasses of juvenile crocodiles viciously hacked with pangas (bush knives), which would have resulted in a prolonged and excruciating death for each of them.
“The NSPCA also obtained video footage where the staff can be seen hacking the animals indiscriminately without regard for the immense suffering they were causing.
“When questioned, they claimed they were following instructions from the owner of the crocodiles and the farm and that the crocodiles were being destroyed because the owner no longer needed them for farming, “ said Nair.
In the same year, the NSPCA laid criminal charges of animal cruelty in terms of the Animals Protection Act no 71 of 1962 and has been fighting for justice ever since.
The case was set for a hearing at the Gravelotte Magistrate Court on March 23.
“However, due to one of the accused requesting legal representation, they postponed the case to June 22,” said Nair.
“Despite this delay, the NSPCA remains determined to get justice for these crocodiles who suffered unnecessarily and hold those responsible for their suffering accountable for their actions.
“It is important to remember that all animals, including crocodiles, are sentient beings (capable of experiencing through their senses) that deserve protection from abuse and cruelty.
“Just because they are not traditionally viewed as our furry companions, does not mean they are not worth fighting for.
“The NSPCA will continue its important work to ensure that all animals are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve,” said Nair.
