Commemorating Hani’s life
The speaker elaborated on what Hani stood for during the struggle and used the lecture to lambaste the ANC leadership for what he said is diverting from what Hani stood for.
As part of the 30th commemoration of the death of anti-apartheid icon Chris Hani, the City of Ekurhuleni hosted the annual Chris Hani lecture at the Boksburg Civic Centre on April 22.
Among the dignitaries who attended the lecture delivered by Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane were SACP leader Blade Nzimande, MMC for Corporate and Shared Services Nkosindiphile Xhakaza (who served as acting mayor on the day), MMC for Corporate and Shared Services Khosi Mabaso, Hani’s widow Limpho and other members of the ANC and SACP.
The speaker elaborated on what Hani stood for during the struggle and used the lecture to lambaste the ANC leadership for what he said is diverting from what Hani stood for and the resolutions adopted to address the wrongs of the past. These issues included the country’s economic and social challenges and economic inequality.
He further claimed that at one point, Hani said; “the ANC would not always be the ANC as you know it now”.
Acting Mayor Xhakaza said: “From a young age, Hani was an activist who did not shy away from addressing injustices in society. We ought to continue to preserve his legacy for generations to come. Although many strides were made in transforming our country, more still needs to be done.
Hani was shot dead in the driveway of his Dawn Park home on April 10, 1993, by Polish immigrant Janusz Walus.
