East’s Longoza earns bronze at provincials

He clocked 33:04 to finish third.

Kwanda Longoza qualified for the ASA senior championships after the East Athletic Club (EAC) athlete grabbed a bronze medal at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) senior championships at UJ Athletic Stadium on March 16.

Longoza finished third after clocking 33:04 behind winner Elliot Kupa and runner-up Thabo Masipa.

Although this was slower than his PB of 30:58 in this distance, it was still an exceptional performance from the man from Etwatwa, as he finished 1:02 behind Kupe and 26 seconds after Masina, who clocked 32:35 for the silver.

Longoza’s teammate, Junior Mhlanga, finished third in his heat after clocking 2:05 in the 800m but finished 15th overall in the combined results. UJ’s Boikanyo Motlhamme won the contest in 1:50.06.

Thomas Moodie of Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) won his heat in the men’s 200m after clocking 22.98 but finished 16th on the overall log. Davee Nqosa from Benoni High Athletic Club (BHAC) finished 18th in the same event.

CGA said it is confident the athletes who qualified to represent the province for the nationals will win medals. The team will be announced in due course.
