ANC takes Ekurhuleni mayoral office

Nkosindiphile Xhakazi of the ANC is new mayor.

Nkosindiphile Xhakazi of the ANC has secured the position of mayor of Ekurhuleni without facing any opposition.

This development took place against the backdrop of the highly anticipated extraordinary council meeting in Ekurhuleni, scheduled for today, April 11 to elect a new mayor.

Before the meeting commenced, Mzi Khumalo, the MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, engaged in discussions with the Speaker.

Khumalo reiterated that his presence aimed to ensure the meeting proceeded as planned, with the election of a new mayor to be completed before April 12.

Expressing concern over the behaviour of councillors, Khumalo highlighted its negative impact on service delivery and stressed the importance of prioritising the interests of the people.

Originally planned for the previous week, the meeting was postponed by Speaker Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, citing undisclosed reasons.

The political landscape in Ekurhuleni remains uncertain, with party disputes lingering following the removal of former Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana through a motion of no confidence, leaving the city without a leader for weeks.

Previous meetings witnessed emotional outbursts, prompting the presence of law enforcement officers in council chambers to maintain order.
