Eight-try Benoni put Meyerton to the sword

Connor Anderson and Johan Grobler scored two tries each.

The Benoni Northerns Rugby Club’s second team ran in eight tries as they outmuscled Meyerton Knights 48-7 to start their Valke President’s Cup campaign on a high on April 6.

It was a one-sided affair and the hosts dominated in all departments and thwarted any attempts by the visitors to wrestle control, with the powerful pack handy in the set-pieces.

Connor Anderson scored the game’s first try early on when he made a break from the centre. The ball was moved to the left from the ruck and Anderson exchanged passes with his outside centre before receiving the ball back to cross the whitewash.

Benoni continued to be relentless in their pursuit and Sheldon Botha increased their lead with a moment of brilliance after taking advantage of a gap on the left flank.

The fullback received a long ball deep in his half, ran across to the left, put boots to the ball and ran across to score his team’s second five-pointer before Johan Grobler increased Benoni’s tally with a brilliantly worked try deep in the half.

The play started with scrum-half Brent van Niekerk feeding Bradin Anderson in midfield. Anderson was brought down but managed to quickly pop the ball to Grobler and the eighth man powered through for his team’s third try.

Anderson added the extra two points as Benoni led 17-0 before the flyhalf added another touchdown from a line break to make it 24-0 after scoring the conversion.

Mangaliso Dlamini pulled one back for Meyerton before half-time after darting in from the left and the brilliant JP Kinghorn placed his kick perfectly between the posts to make it 24-7 at the break.

The second half began with the same intensity and Benoni added four more tries as Grobler and Anderson grabbed their brace and Van Niekerk and substitute Luthando Thakoane scored the other five-pointers.

Grobler touched down first and Thokoane followed after powering through from close range. The prop received a pass from (23), who pounced on a loose ball that flew past the locks in the throw-in. He evaded one marker and ran in under the posts.

Anderson added his second of the day when he fiercely pushed down his marker to score on the left and Van Nierkerk completed the rout late on to help Benoni start the season brilliantly with a 48-7 victory.
