Church feeding scheme’s pantry needs a boost

The Boksburg SDA English Church is on a mission to combat hunger and uplift those in need through their dedicated feeding scheme.

The Boksburg Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) English Congregation Church’s feeding scheme has been making a difference in the lives of people in underprivileged areas and the homeless for the past year.

The scheme, which was started by the church’s Women’s Ministry in a bid to better the plight of the community, fills many hungry tummies every Saturday at 09:00 and 13:00.

According to Pierre Hunter, a member of the church, the feeding scheme was started in response to the high levels of hunger in the community.

“We saw a need to help because many people go a day or two without eating. Some of them are children and it is hard to see.

“We feed over 75 people, with the majority being homeless individuals,” said Hunter.
He expressed their satisfaction in their work, emphasising the gratitude of those they serve, which serves as their driving force.

“The recipients of the feeding scheme are always grateful for the food, and their appreciation is a source of motivation for us.

“Whenever they see us, they are always smiling and it is an overwhelming feeling that keeps us going,” said Hunter.

The church funds the feeding scheme through donations from its congregation, however, the rising cost of food can be a challenge.

“We usually fund food out of our own pockets but it does get to a point where we simply don’t have enough money to buy food.

“With the arrival of winter, we are kindly requesting contributions of non-perishable food items to support our feeding programme.

“Specifically, we are seeking donations of rice, pap, nutritious vegetarian options, beans and lentils.”
