NPO hosts school safety talk to promote secure learning environments

Balmoral College learners get valuable lessons on bullying, substance abuse, and more.

The Thusang Community Development NPO, in collaboration with the Reiger Park SAPS, the Department of Social Development and Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens (CPW), held a school safety talk at Balmoral College in Reiger Park on April 26.

The purpose of this awareness initiative was to promote safe and secure learning environments free from bullying, substance abuse, and other threats that can compromise learners’ well-being.

According to the founder of the NPO, Lufuno Mudzuli, during the session, representatives from the organisations engaged the learners, teachers, and parents, providing valuable insights and strategies to create a safer school community.

The learners engage in school safety talk.

The topics covered included:
Bullying prevention
• Identifying and addressing different forms of bullying.
• Empowering learners to speak up and report incidents.
• Implementing effective anti-bullying policies and interventions.
Substance abuse awareness
• Educating about the dangers of drug and alcohol use.
• Promoting healthy coping mechanisms and decision-making skills.
• Connecting learners with support services and rehabilitation programmes.
Threat mitigation
• Enhancing security measures at schools.
• Fostering a culture of vigilance and community involvement.
“That we work together as a community is vital to ensure children can learn and thrive in a safe environment. This collaboration is a step in the right direction, and we are committed to ongoing support and engagement with the school,” said Mudzuli.
