Samuel Munyai (66), a member of the Tshepo Ya Sechaba Organisation based in Dawn Park, recently clinched the first position in the 800m sprint in the 60-69 age category at the provincial Golden Games for elderly people at Ruimsig Stadium, Roodepoort.
Munyai’s outstanding performance has earned him a spot in the upcoming national games, where he will represent his province and showcase his skills against the best senior athletes in the country.
The event, organised under the auspices of the Department of Sport, Art and Recreation in collaboration with the Department of Social Development and supported by the Ekurhuleni Older Persons Forum, celebrated active ageing and physical prowess among senior citizens.

The Golden Games featured sporting disciplines, ranging from track events to race walking, drawing participation from seasoned contenders and first-time competitors.
Munyai, who practised diligently, expressed his pride in his achievement and credited the support he received from his family and friends.
Cynthia Nhlapho, the founder of Tshepo Ya Sechaba, commended Munyai for his outstanding achievements and acknowledged the exceptional support of the community and their partners.
Nhlapho highlighted the integral role collaborative efforts played in fostering community engagement and promoting healthy lifestyles among older persons.
Nhlapho expressed optimism about their prospects in the upcoming stages of the competition and shared her excitement for Munyai’s qualification, stating, “I am thrilled for Samuel and hopeful he will excel in the national rounds.”
The Golden Games, an annual fixture on the senior sports calendar, is a platform for older persons to showcase their athletic abilities and promote active ageing principles.
