Reiger Park’s ‘lifesaver’ shares his journey
His work, often behind the scenes, has proven to be a lifeline for residents facing dire emergencies.
For 14 years, Kevin Koopman has made a difference in Reiger Park as a volunteer community medic.
His work, often behind the scenes, has proven to be a lifeline for residents facing dire emergencies.
Kevin’s journey into community service began after two years of volunteering at the local fire department.
It was here that he first recognised a critical gap in the emergency response system, one that placed lives at risk due to the slow arrival of ambulances in urgent situations.
“Waiting for an ambulance to respond was a big problem. The community needed a more reliable and effective ambulance service.
“Sometimes, those minutes can mean the difference between life and death and I knew I had to step in.”

After this realisation, Kevin committed himself to providing essential emergency care in those crucial moments before professional medical help arrived.
Equipped with basic medical supplies and an unwavering dedication, he started responding to calls for help.
Whether it was a car accident, a gunshot wound or a child with severe abdominal pain, Kevin became and still is the person Reiger Park residents rely on when every second counts.
However, his journey has not been without challenges.
Kevin faced numerous obstacles, from ambulance delays to shortages of essential medical equipment. Despite this, his commitment has never wavered.
“Responding to a wide range of emergencies, I’m often the first on the scene, offering much-needed assistance,” he explained.
“I’ve had to cover many expenses myself due to a lack of resources, but I’m committed to making an impact.”
His work doesn’t stop with simply showing up in someone’s hour of need.
“I have also forged key partnerships to ensure I can offer the best care possible. One of my most important collaborations is with the EMS Chaplaincy and Trauma Support.
“This partnership has allowed me to respond to emergencies with additional resources and emotional support for those involved.”
Kevin hopes to grow this network and expand the services he offers.
“I’m also looking into furthering my education so I can continue to improve my service to the community.”
Despite the financial and logistical hurdles he faces, Kevin remains motivated by his love for Reiger Park and its people.
“It’s not about recognition or rewards,” he stated. “It’s about being there when someone needs you most.”
