Prioritise your mental health
The event was themed ‘It’s Time to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace’.
Tambo Memorial Hospital’s multi-disciplinary team, in collaboration with the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA), commemorated World Mental Health Day on October 10.
The event had the theme ‘It’s Time to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace’.
According to hospital spokesperson Zoliswa Nzeku, the event reminded all healthcare workers to prioritise mental health using strategies to prevent mental health conditions and techniques to cope with such challenges.
“Beyond raising awareness of mental health in the workplace, the campaign was also an opportunity for outpatients to ask questions about mental health and the services available for mental health patients at the facility.
“In addition, the team distributed educational pamphlets to patients and staff.”
Nzeku said World Mental Health Day highlights the vital connection between mental health and work.
“Safe, healthy working environments can act as a protective factor for mental health.
“Unhealthy conditions, including stigma, discrimination and exposure to risks like harassment and other poor working conditions, can pose significant risks, affecting mental health.”

Speaking on behalf of the hospital’s HR department, Viwe Sipunzi highlighted the Wellness Programme’s role in supporting staff by providing services to help maintain mental health.
“We outsource psychologists and social workers to assist our employees.
“Employees can apply for incapacity leave if they have exhausted their sick leave.
“Additionally, we do home visits for employees on extended sick leave in collaboration with wellness staff and occupational therapists,” Sipunzi explained.
In his closing remarks, Dr Moeketsi Khabisi, the head of the psychiatry department, stressed the need to prioritise mental health in personal and professional scopes.
He urged employees to proactively address their mental well-being, reminding them that mental health is as important as physical health.
“Taking care of one’s mental health is essential for personal fulfilment. It enhances productivity and fosters a supportive work environment.
“By prioritising their well-being, employees can contribute more effectively to the hospital’s mission of providing quality care while building resilience in the face of daily challenges,” said Khabisi.
