Pedestrian robbed at gunpoint in Ravenswood

A woman was left traumatised after being robbed of her mobile phone while walking home from a petrol station near Ravenswood Centre.

A pedestrian was left shaken after being robbed of her mobile phone near Ravenswood Shopping Centre on November 26.

According to her brother, Phumlani Gxowa, the incident occurred around 11:00 as she was walking home from a nearby petrol station.

“A car stopped and two men got out, one armed with a gun. One of them grabbed her while the other searched her. They didn’t harm her physically; they just took her phone from her pocket.”

Gxowa explained that this was the first time his sister had experienced such an incident, despite frequently walking alone.

His sister used their younger brother’s phone to call him at work and tell him what happened. Despite the traumatic event, Gxowa expressed reluctance to report the crime to the police.

“We didn’t open a case because I don’t think it will solve anything,” he said.

Constable Khakhathi Siphoro, spokesperson for Boksburg North SAPS, encouraged victims to report such crimes.

“They should block the stolen phone and contact the service provider with the IMEI number. If the phone is insured, she can file a claim.”

Siphoro stressed that reporting crimes is crucial for tracking suspects and preventing further incidents.

“We have had similar incidents in the past. We rely on information from the community.

“Without it, our efforts are limited,” she said, highlighting that patrol vehicles and safety initiatives are in place to address crime hotspots and enhance public safety.
