NPO honours community volunteers

One of the speakers at the event shared her personal anecdotes of how her son influenced her decision to support the local feeding scheme.

The Ramaphosa-based NGO Thusang Community Development recently held a gala dinner to acknowledge those behind the successes of its community projects.
The volunteers, partners and individuals in the community received certificates of appreciation.

The glittering ceremony at a local church also served as a platform to celebrate the 2024 achievements and thank its sponsor partners and other stakeholders for their continued support.

Seen with founder Lufuno Mudzuli are the volunteers acknowledged for selflessly doing phenomenal work to uplift their community.

Speaking at the event, Lufuno Mudzuli, the NPO’s founder, described the volunteer team as extraordinary and selfless individuals who had dedicated their lives to serving their community. However, despite doing exceptional work in their community, they are often overlooked.
Thusang is involved in several community projects, including charity work like a weekly feeding scheme, raising awareness on GBV and other social ills, victim counselling and referrals.

Thank you
Mudzuli pointed out that despite the many hurdles the volunteers and organisation had to contend with, they had risen above all the challenges.
“These awards say that we notice your work and thank you. Thank you to all our partners and sponsors. Without your support, our community projects would not have been successful.

“Some people came here with the wrong expectations, and when they discovered that we don’t offer salaries, they turned their backs on us. What worries me is that instead of helping the most vulnerable in their community and gaining work experience to build their CVs, they returned to their homes to sit idly.

“We also thank the Boksburg Advertiser for its continued support regarding coverage and for making our projects known out there. Many people know us because of your support.”

Inspirational story
One of the inspirational stories at the event was that of a resident whose child benefits from the weekly feeding scheme.
Sindi Jele a speaker at the event, said despite discouraging her 12-year-old son from getting food from the feeding scheme because there is always enough food at home, he would slip out of the house to enjoy the feeding scheme meal.

“He said to me, ‘Mum, the food, especially the fish, they cook there tastes very nice and they serve us with happy smiles. I wish you could also cook it like them‘.
“The part that touched me was when he said to me, ‘Mum, please, when you get your food items from the grocery stokvel, give some to the project so they can continue cooking for us‘.”
This prompted Sindy, who has a job, to donate food to the scheme, and she encouraged other employed parents to do the same.
She pledged 10kg flour, 10kg rice, 12 cans of food, 2l bottles of cooking oil, a bottle of dishwashing liquid and other basic necessities to the project during the event.

Speakers thanked the Thusang team and management, saying their organisation serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for the community.
Some children benefitting from the scheme, sponsor Mister Sweet, local pastors, community leaders, the SAPS, the CPF, Gauteng Community Safety and ward committee representatives attended the event.
