Ex-SAA captain to talk on Helderberg tragedy

The retired SAA pilot will talk about the tragedy that claimed 159 lives.

Opinions on the mid-air disaster that led to the death of 159 people on board the SAA 295 Helderberg, an SAA Boeing 747-244 Super B Combi, have long been shrouded by conspiracies.

The infamous aircraft plunged into the Indian Ocean on November 28 1987, east of Mauritius, on its return flight from Taipei, Taiwan, to the then-Jan Smuts International Airport.
Investigations found that a catastrophic fire in the cargo area caused the craft to break up mid-air before crashing into the ocean.

Retired SAA captain Karl Jensen and frequent flyer of the notorious Helderberg will give an informative talk about the tragedy at the upcoming South African Air Force Association East Rand branch’s monthly luncheon.
Join the conversation at noon on February 21 at the Cafe@The Range, Kempton Park.
