Mikayla selected to represent South Africa
Mikayla received provincial and national colours for Disco Dance Duos.
Mikayla Minnaar, a Grade Seven learner at Laerskool Concordia, was recently selected to represent South Africa at the Freestyle Championships in Blackpool and the Disco World Championships in Poland in June.
According to the talented dancer’s mother, Luzane, being selected is not only a huge achievement but a great honour for Mikayla to represent her country.
Luzane said Mikayla, who trains with Chantal Riviere de Klerk and Craig Riviere at Dance Illusions Bedfordview, has been dancing since the age of five.
“Not even an operation on both feet at the age of six could put her off. We are proud of Mikayla as she balances a busy schedule. I envy her drive and passion to persevere. The road to this has not been an easy one. She is only 12, but she has the determination of an adult. Everything she does, she does with passion.
“While kids her age are enjoying weekends, Mikayla is busy with school and sport six out of the seven days a week.
“She has also been selected as a prefect at Concordia, which is already a lot of responsibility, attending school events and showing up. She also participates in action netball, school netball, fast five hockey, field hockey, and athletics. In between, she is a top student with fantastic marks. Her school friends are her greatest support system,” said Luzane.
Mikayla, however, needs support to make her dreams of dancing at an international level come true.
