Young karateka aims for more success

She won two golds at the Gauteng East Championships at Brakpan Indoor Centre on March 1.

Serial winner Dantè Lucas (9), from Rynfield, has consistently excelled in karate, earning regional, provincial and national medals multiple times.

Since stepping foot inside a dojo for the first time two years ago, Dantè has risen the ranks quickly and her hard work, dedication and thirst to improve saw her win medals in eight championships since May 2023.

The Ashton International College Grade Four learner added two more golds to her collection when she won her kata and kumite match-ups during the Gauteng East Championships at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre on March 1.

“I was against two opponents. I was scared at first but I did well,” she said.

Despite being a newcomer to the sport, the Tenshinkan Karate Club member has moved up the rankings quickly, thanks to her hard grind at training.

She’s a pre-green belt and aims for junior shodan in the next few years.

Dantè’s father, Craig, had a huge smile when responding to how he felt seeing the young karateka embrace the sport and achieve so much in such a short time.

“I’m extremely proud. Seeing my child excel at something gives me the idea that I am doing something right. Her mother and I are extremely proud of her and what she achieved,” he said.

Although it is good to win, Dantè has learnt the importance of being humble in victory and gracious in defeat and respecting her opponents.

“I learnt to be dedicated. I always practice and try my best. The big lesson is to understand that even when I try my best, it does not mean I will always come first,” said Dantè.

Craig sees a bright future in the sport for the nine-year-old.

“We might be a black belt sooner than we think. From starting last year to being a pre-green; she moved up the belts quickly.

“Sensei Catherine Venter also sees a lot of potential and great possibilities in Dantè,” Craig said.

Dantè thanked shihan Venter for playing a crucial role in her success.

“I learnt a lot from sensei Catherine. She taught me respect and to always be grateful.”

While her 2025 is packed with lofty ambitions, she targets the junior karateka of the year award.
