Boksburg High honours longest-serving teacher

Boksburg High School honours its longest-serving teacher, Rona De Klerk, for her 21 years of dedication.

Boksburg High School has paid tribute to its longest-serving teacher who has been part of the institution for 21 years.

Rona De Klerk, who boasts 34 years of teaching experience, was recently honoured with a cheque and a certificate in recognition of her dedication and commitment to education.

De Klerk, originally from Reiger Park, began her teaching career at Oosrand Secondary School, now known as Oosrand School of Specialisation, before joining Boksburg High School in 2004.

Reflecting on her journey, she expressed gratitude for being part of a supportive team.

“I will always be grateful for joining a good team. I am proud to be part of them. I will never regret coming to Boksburg High,” said De Klerk.

Throughout her career, De Klerk has taught multiple subjects, but she has primarily been a tourism educator for many years. She takes pride in the school’s consistent achievement of a 100% pass rate in tourism for the Ekurhuleni South District.

“While still at school, we did not specialise in any subjects. We were trained to teach every subject. Now, I teach tourism and am proud that Boksburg High School has maintained a 100% pass rate in this subject. It is a great accomplishment for me,” she said.

De Klerk studied at Rand College of Education for three years before pursuing a higher diploma at North-West University. She later completed her BEd Honours degree at the University of Johannesburg.

Speaking about her experiences at Boksburg High School, De Klerk described it as a “happy place where I can exhale.”

She expressed her desire to continue teaching at the school until retirement.

She also acknowledged the evolving landscape of education and how certain changes have negatively impacted teachers. Despite these challenges, she remains committed to her profession.

Looking ahead to retirement, she plans to give back to her community by offering her skills and experience.
She expressed gratitude to the two schools and thanked them for giving her the opportunity.

“I thank God for the talent He has given me. My parents for affording me the opportunity and allowing me to be myself. I also thank my wonderful family for the continuous support they have shown to me.”
