Zac Gemmell shines at Ekurhuleni South High Schools chess tournament

As the sole representative from CBC in the senior division, Zac’s victory was both remarkable and inspiring.

Zac Gemmell (15), a standout chess player from Christian Brothers’ College (CBC), delivered a stellar performance at the first Ekurhuleni South High Schools Individuals Chess Tournament of the year.

The event, recently held at E.G. Jansen Hoërskool, saw Gemmell emerge as the champion of the senior division, winning all five of his matches in a flawless display of skill and strategy.

As the sole representative from CBC in the senior division, Zac’s victory was both remarkable and inspiring.

His ability to dominate the competition, despite being the only player from his school in the division, speaks volumes about his dedication and mastery of the game.

Reflecting on his success, he expressed pride in his achievement and shared insights into his approach to the game.

“Chess requires hard work, memorisation of theory, and solving puzzles for pattern recognition.

“The more you build on theory and pattern recognition, the better you perform in your games.

“This philosophy underscores the depth of my understanding of chess, a game that demands not only strategic thinking but also a deep knowledge of established moves and tactics.”

He credits casual weekend tournaments for helping him prepare for larger competitions, such as the highly anticipated Moja Chess Extravaganza—a week-long event with exciting prizes and opportunities to boost his chess rating.

“The Moja Chess Extravaganza is a significant event on the chess calendar, attracting top talent from across the region.

“I am optimistic about chances in this tournament, having honed my skills through consistent practice and competition.

“I’m looking forward to doing well there. If I perform strongly, it will help improve my rating significantly.”

A strong performance at this event could not only bring Zac recognition but also open doors to further opportunities in the chess world.

Zac expressed gratitude to his school, family, friends and his coaches.
