Oosrand soars with pride as young high jumper shines despite the odds

The 14-year-old's journey to this remarkable achievement is nothing short of inspiring.

Oosrand School of Specialisation has recognised one of its learners, Ethan Kraft for securing second place at the recent Boksburg Laerskole Atletiek Vereniging (BLAV) event with a high jump of 1.65 metres in the U15 category.

The 14-year-old’s journey to this remarkable achievement is nothing short of inspiring.

With no sporting equipment or coaching available at his school, the determined athlete from Reiger Park only managed to practice the day before the competition at his former primary school.

“When I qualified for provincials, I went back to my old school, Lakeside Primary, and trained the whole day,” Ethan said.

“I’m proud of myself because I came this far without any guidance or equipment to practice. I had a goal and I always wanted to reach this level.”

Although he was eventually knocked out during the provincial championships, Ethan said the experience meant a great deal to him.

“I was nervous because we were competing against great athletes who knew the sport well. At first, I took it lightly, but as the levels increased, I realised just how tough the competition really was. Still, getting that far meant everything to me.”

Ethan’s love for athletics started back in Grade Four when he first discovered his passion for long jump, shot put and high jump. Over time, high jump became his favourite.

“I had other interests, but I enjoy high jump the most,” he said.

Looking ahead, Ethan is hopeful for more opportunities to train and grow.

“If another opportunity comes, I’ll put in the work. I want to one day compete at national or even international level,” he said.

He was quick to thank the people who stood by him through it all.

“”I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family, girlfriend and friends. They were always there, motivating me and pushing me to where I am today.”

Ethan also hopes to inspire his peers in a community often overshadowed by negative influences.

“In Reiger Park, place known for gangsterism, drugs and crime, I want to change the narrative. Sports can change your life, it’s something positive to turn to.”

Principal of the school, Peter Arendse echoed the school’s pride in Ethan’s efforts.

“He did all of this without any proper equipment or coaching, and we are incredibly proud of how far he has come.”

Arendse is now appealing to the public for donations of sporting equipment to help ensure that future talents like Ethan have the tools they need to succeed. To help, contact 084 567 9820.
