NWS Benoni dojo on top at karate festival

The club won a total of 39 medals.

The New World Shotokan (NWS) Karate Benoni Dojo dominated the NWS Festival of Karate held in Boksburg on May 10.

They beat 10 dojos from across South Africa, ending the competition at the top with 14 gold, 13 silver, and 12 bronze medals, for a total of 39 medals.

Junior karateka Refiloe Doro, who recently graded to shodan and earned a silver medal at the WUKF SA National Championships in Gqeberha, won the Junior Girls’ Shotokan Cup.

Wessel Ferreira won the best senior male kata and kumite awards while also sharing the overall best senior brown belt award with Zoe Doro.

Refiloe and Durjay Pooran were the best female and male cadets. Refiloe also won the overall cadet award.

Meganè Potgieter was the best junior female karateka.
