Local karatekas shine at prestigious national tournament in Durban
Three local stars brought home top results at a national tournament hosted by United Full Contact Karate SA under the guidance of Shihan Moeti Holomo.
Karate excellence was on full display in Durban recently, as Ekon Kai karateka from Reiger Park converged at the Umlazi Indoor Sports Centre to compete in a highly anticipated tournament hosted by United Full Contact Karate South Africa (UFCKSA).
The event brought together 17 affiliated karate organisations under the banner of Karate South Africa, showcasing the strength, unity and competitive spirit of the martial arts community.
Shihan Holomo, of Ekon Kai, hailed the event as a milestone in the development of youth martial arts.
“We are proud to see such high standards of discipline, technique and heart among these young athletes. This event was not just about winning, it was about building character and unity. When our youth step onto the mat, they represent more than themselves. They represent the future of karate.”

Holomo said three local karateka represented their club with pride and outstanding performances.
“Popi Mahlasela, competing in the under 30kg category, delivered a dynamic performance that earned her a third-place finish. Her speed and mental sharpness helped her navigate tough opponents with skill and grace.
“Thato Mohlomi stole the spotlight in the girls under 50kg division, claiming first place after a series of impressive matches. Her determination and control were evident in every round.
“Tokelo Yika fought valiantly in the under 70kg category, achieving fourth place in a strong field of competitors. Despite narrowly missing the podium, his grit and sportsmanship earned praise from coaches and referees alike.”
Speaking about their achievements, Holomo, said: “I’m incredibly proud. They trained tirelessly, and to see their efforts pay off on a national stage is deeply rewarding. These results reflect not only their talent but also their dedication to our dojo values: discipline, respect, and resilience.”
