ERU falls short against Meyerton at the Graveyard in rugged clash

Eastrand United battled hard but couldn’t recover after an intense first half as Meyerton walked away with a 27-10 victory in Reiger Park.

The atmosphere was electric at the Graveyard in Reiger Park as Eastrand United (ERU) welcomed Meyerton Knights for a fiercely contested rugby clash filled with heavy tackles, moments of skill, and concerning injury stoppages.

At halftime, ERU coach Godfrey Mbongeni said Meyerton held a 20-10 lead following a tough first forty minutes, during which ERU fought relentlessly to stay in the contest.
“ERU’s sole try came courtesy of the dependable Thorn Khumalo, who powered past the defence to spark excitement among the home supporters.

“Thato Pheleu successfully converted the try and also added a timely penalty before the break. Despite these efforts, the visitors maintained their advantage at halftime.”

Mbongeni said the second half saw the pace drop as fatigue took its toll and frequent injury stoppages disrupted the flow of play.
“Ultimately, the game was cut short with no extra time added after multiple treatment breaks stalled momentum on both sides.”

Meyerton puts pressure on ERU.

Meyerton capitalised with one more try before the final whistle, sealing a 27-10 win.
“Although we were disappointed with the outcome, the team demonstrated strong discipline and flashes of teamwork, particularly in the opening half. We didn’t show up fully and missed many tackles.

“We scrambled too much and allowed Meyerton too much space to run. It was a tough match, and we could have beaten them if we had really turned up.”

Fans at the Graveyard continued to cheer the home side despite the loss. While coaches and officials expressed concern over the physical demands of the match, they praised the players’ commitment and resilience.

“We’re proud of the fight our team showed.”
Though the match ended in defeat, Eastrand United will take valuable lessons forward as they prepare for their next challenge.
