Valke Merlin League: ERU delivers good performances in league
Despite limited resources, the players are performing well.
East Rand United’s first team continued their impressive form in the Valke Merlin League, winning all their matches so far.
In their fourth fixture on June 7 at the Reiger Park Sports Arena, they defeated rivals Elsburg 60–26.
Speaking to the Boksburg Advertiser, ERU coach Godfrey Mbangeni said the team suffered a slow start, allowing Elsburg to dominate early on. “They were very physical, and our players initially got caught up in reacting to that instead of focusing on our game plan,” he explained.

Despite the early pressure, ERU regrouped, maintained discipline, and led 19–7 at halftime. “After the break, we came back strong, stuck to our structure, dominated the scrums, and the game turned in our favour,” said Mbangeni.
ERU scored eight tries, converting seven, along with two penalty kicks. Elsburg managed four tries.
“Beating Elsburg was particularly satisfying,” Mbangeni added. “They’re one of the stronger teams in the league and beat us previously in the President’s League. Even their coaches admitted we outplayed them.”

On the team’s progress
“Our team is improving every week,” he said. “The players are performing well, and thankfully, we’ve had no injuries in four consecutive games.”
Challenges off the field
Mbangeni highlighted the team’s resilience despite limited resources. “We train without lights, on a small 20x20m space. Transporting players to games is also a struggle because we have no sponsor or funding.”

Areas for improvement
“Discipline—especially in the small things—is where we can still improve. It makes a big difference on the field,” he said.
Looking ahead
“Our goal is to collect maximum points and win the league. That will help us return to the first division next year and hopefully attract sponsors,” Mbangeni said.
ERU travels to face Heidelberg on June 14, then hosts Meyerton at the Graveyard on June 21. “Both games will be tough. These teams want to beat us, so we need to prepare well.”
Second team update
ERU’s second team lost 33-22 on June 7, marking their first defeat after three straight wins.
“Despite the loss, they’ve done well,” said Mbangeni. “Elsburg had more experienced players, while we fielded a younger squad and missed a few key players. Still, it was an entertaining game and a great learning opportunity.”
To his players, Mbangeni said: “Stay humble, keep working hard, and never lose focus.”
