Boksburg Girl Guides embrace change with Cloete

The Boksburg Girl Guides entered a new era of leadership and vision when Melody Cloete took the helm, pledging to empower young girls through creativity, adventure and youth-led planning.

The Boksburg Girl Guides are stepping into a new chapter under the leadership of Melody Cloete after being appointed the new Adult Leader for Girl Guides Gauteng East Boksburg.

With a passion for youth development and a strong commitment to community, Cloete is already bringing fresh energy to the movement.
“I want every girl to feel seen, heard and inspired. Guiding should be a space where they can grow through adventure, leadership and friendship.”

Cloete, who lives in Freeway Park, is a mother, aunt and volunteer with a background in drama in education. After leaving Durban two and a half years ago, she wanted a new opportunity to give back. According to her, that opportunity came unexpectedly, through a phone call from her stepdaughter, a long-time Guide.

“She told me, ‘If no one volunteers, the Boksburg Guides will have to close’. I knew right away I had to help,” she said.

Putting girls in the lead
The newly appointed leader said her vision centres on youth-led planning, where the girls take an active role in shaping their experience..

“We can only succeed if the girls are excited about what we’re doing. Each term, I want them involved in choosing themes, challenges and projects. If they own it, they grow from it.”
Cloete steps into the role after long-time leader Clair Murphy, whose years of dedication helped sustain the Boksburg unit.

“Clair built something strong. I aim to enhance that with new ideas, effective communication, and a focus on what matters to girls today.
“The Girl Guides face challenges such as resource and volunteer shortages, just like many other community organisations.
“We need more hands, but I know life is busy. That’s why I’m encouraging flexible involvement. Even a small commitment can make a big impact.”

She said she plans to support volunteers with simple training, shared resources and a team spirit.

“You don’t need experience, you just need a heart.

Growing community connections
The local face of the movement also hopes to grow it by connecting with schools, churches and families.
“I’d love to host open days, speak at schools or visit community centres. If someone knows a group of girls who might benefit, or wants to help in any way, I want to hear from them.”

While she will track membership growth and badge achievements, her focus is on meaningful change.
“When a girl brings a friend, runs part of a meeting, or proudly shares what she’s learnt, that’s success,” she said.
“I want to leave behind a culture of connection, creativity and confidence. If even one girl walks away believing she’s strong and capable, I’ve done my job,” she added.
