The search for the owner of Rynfield Drapers & Outfitters is continuing, with sources close to the investigation saying that police are following up on promising leads.

According to information received, Mohammed Seedat (42) was kidnapped following a business robbery shortly after 09:20 yesterday (July 23).

Visiting the Rynfield Value Mall, on Pretoria Road, the Benoni City Times was met with an empty parking area and staff from neighbouring businesses still reeling in shock.

“It all seemed to happen so fast,” said one business owner, who wished to remain anonymous. I have, for a long time, feared something like this would happen and today was the day. I pray that Mohammed is found safe.”

Eyewitnesses allege that two vehicles entered the premises, one described as a gunmetal grey Mercedes-Benz.

It has since been confirmed that the vehicle had false number plates.

Contrary to what was previously reported by a source within the SAPS, six men entered the store along with Seedat.

The security guard, the store manager, and the staff were held at gunpoint as one of the assailants made his way behind the counter to access the till.

An undisclosed amount of money was taken. Seedat’s hands were bound behind his back, and he was led back to the awaiting vehicle.

“The vehicle sped out of the parking area and onto Pretoria Road, in the direction of Crystal Park,” said an eyewitness.

“Two shots rang out. From what we heard, it was the security guard who fired at the suspect’s vehicle.”

Seedat is described as a dedicated family man and compassionate businessman.

“He is one of the kindest people I have ever met. We are praying for his safe return,” said an employee at the centre.

The kidnapping of Seedat is the second reported matter in just over a year.

Shanshudeen Faki (68), co-owner of Dawood Megastore in Dunswart, was taken from outside the business on May 11, 2024.

The Brakpan Herald reported that a ransom demand of $3m (R55m) was allegedly made on May 12. The Lakefield resident’s body was sadly discovered in Leachville, Brakpan, on May 13.
