Goudrand learner leads Valke with passion and purpose
At just 13, Laerskool Goudrand Primary’s head boy Daniel Kabamba is already making his mark as the captain of the Valke U-13 rugby team.
Daniel Kabamba (13) from Laerskool Goudrand Primary is far from your average schoolboy – he’s the driving force behind the Valke U13 rugby team and their proud captain.
The Ravenswood local recently led the Valke squad in one of South Africa’s premier provincial rugby tournaments, stepping up to guide his teammates through fierce competition while proudly wearing the captain’s armband.
“Being named captain was an honour I’ll never forget. Even though we didn’t get the results we had hoped for, I gave it my all and stood tall for my team.”
The team finished 15th overall in the tournament, but for Daniel, the opportunity to lead was an unforgettable experience.
“It was during our tough training sessions and friendly matches that my leadership stood out. The coaches saw something in me, not just skill, but presence, focus and determination.”
Daniel also serves as the U13 rugby coach at his school, further showcasing his leadership qualities and passion for the game. His rugby journey only began a few years ago.
“When I was 10, I wasn’t really into sport, but someone saw potential in me, and I decided to give rugby a shot. I’ve never looked back.
“That one decision changed everything. By the time I was in the U12 group, I had already earned a spot on the Valke team and was beginning to make a name for myself.
“Then came a milestone. Last year, scouts noticed me, and I was selected to represent South Africa in Italy. It was a dream come true to be chosen for the national team, and to travel overseas was something I’ll never forget.”
Rugby is only part of Daniel’s success story. He is also the head boy of Laerskool Goudrand Primary and ranks among the top 10 academic achievers in his grade. Balancing his studies, leadership responsibilities, and rugby hasn’t been easy, but he takes it all in his stride.
“Balancing everything felt like a rollercoaster, but I pushed through. It’s about staying focused, managing your time, and alays believing in yourself.”

He emphasised that rugby has taught him more than just how to tackle and pass.
“It’s a great sport that’s taught me discipline, respect, teamwork, and how to lead.”
He added that he has his eyes firmly set on his next goal, which is becoming part of a Springbok team.
“I’m just getting started. One day, I hope to wear the green and gold.”
