After 100 parkruns, Peter shows no sign of slowing down

At 71, Peter Lehong has turned his 100th parkrun into a joyous celebration of heart, hustle, and friendship.

Libradene resident Peter Lehong reached a significant milestone on July 26, completing his 100th parkrun at the Boksburg Stadium.
At 71 years old, Lehong described this achievement as the realisation of a long-held dream and proof of his dedication to health and community.

“I have always wanted to finish 100 parkruns and now I’ve done it. It’s super exciting, and I am overjoyed. This has been a goal I’ve worked towards for years.”
Lehong’s journey began in 2017 when a close friend introduced him to the weekly 5km parkrun events. At the time, he aimed to complete the course in about 36 minutes, running consistently and enjoying the companionship that comes with the community event.

“A friend of mine introduced me to it, and I never looked back.
“Parkrun quickly became part of my lifestyle, not just a race but a social and health activity that I looked forward to every week.”

However, his journey was not without challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic forced the suspension of parkruns for many months, disrupting routines.
“In 2023, Lehong underwent a hip operation that forced him to give up running. Instead of stepping away from parkrun altogether, he adapted by walking the course.

“During Covid, we became slower, and after my hip operation, I couldn’t run anymore, so I started walking instead. I now complete the 5km in about 45 to 46 minutes, but I have never missed a Saturday. I’m still out there every week.”

Despite these setbacks, Lehong maintains that parkrun has had an enormous positive impact on his life. It has helped him stay fit, fostered friendships, and provided mental and emotional benefits.
“This has completely changed my life. Parkrun is fun, I have met many friends, and it is also beneficial for health, especially for someone in their 70s. It motivates me to stay active during the week and to keep going even when it’s tough sometimes.”

For Lehong, the weekly parkrun event is more than just exercise; it’s a ritual that offers balance and joy.
“Parkrun is me. It’s where I unwind and clear my head. I never miss it. Every Saturday at 08:00, I make sure I am there.”
Now with 100 parkruns completed, Lehong isn’t resting on his laurels. Looking ahead, he hopes to reach even greater heights in the coming year.
“I hope to achieve either 150 or 200 runs next year. It’s about keeping fit, staying connected, and continuing to challenge myself.”
