Family buries young Villa Liza fire victims
Neighbours and friends united to help the grieving families lay Anele and Liyakha Shabalala and brothers Nkazimulo and Fanelo Mthabela to rest after the Villa Lisa fire.
After weeks of heartbreak and mourning, the four children who died in a Villa Liza shack fire were finally laid to rest on August 16.
Anele Shabalala (14), Liyakha Shabalala (five), and half-brothers Nkazimulo and Fanelo Mthabela, both aged four, died when a fire engulfed two shacks on June 27.
According to Nomfundo Shabalala, the sister of some of the victims, the families received confirmation through DNA results on August 13, which provided the final confirmation of their loss.
“Anele and Liyakha Shabalala were buried in their home province of Mpumalanga, while Nkazimulo and Fanelo Mthabela were laid to rest in KZN,” she said.
Nomfundo reflected on memories of the children and the heartbreak of lives cut short.
“Anele loved to read and dreamt of becoming a teacher. Liyakha was full of laughter, always playing with everyone. Nkazimulo and Fanelo were inseparable, curious and joyful. Losing them all at once is something no family should ever endure,” she said.

Nomfundo added that the support from the community and their ward councillor had been overwhelming.
“In moments like these, you realise the strength of the bonds we share. We are truly grateful to everyone who came to lift our spirits and help us through this incredibly difficult time.
“They played an active role in assisting us, helping with funeral arrangements, providing meals and offering practical support. Meanwhile, the councillor provided emotional guidance, helping us cope with the unimaginable loss.”
