Hospital honoured for outstanding HIV care

Tambo Memorial Hospital has earned top honours for HIV care, leading in viral load completion and ensuring every HIV-positive infant receives timely treatment.

Tambo Memorial Hospital has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to South Africa’s national HIV response programme, receiving accolades from the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI).

The hospital was awarded two certificates of achievement: one for attaining the highest percentage of viral load completion and another for achieving the highest rate of PCR-positive cases successfully linked to care.

“This recognition highlights our continued commitment to strengthening HIV treatment services, ensuring effective monitoring, and facilitating the prompt initiation of care for vulnerable populations, particularly infants,” said Zoliswa Nzeku, hospital spokesperson.

“The highest percentage of viral load completion award celebrates the performance of the hospital’s Emthonjeni Clinic, which ensures nearly all patients on antiretroviral therapy complete their required viral load tests.

“The clinic’s success reflects a coordinated approach to ART distribution, strong adherence counselling, timely viral load monitoring, and prompt management of treatment failure.

HAST manager Serengwane Lethuba said: “Achieving such a high level of viral load completion is a testament to the dedication of our clinical team and the efficiency of our patient tracking systems. It reassures us that our patients are not only receiving treatment, but that the treatment is working effectively to maintain their health.”

“The highest PCR positive linked to care award recognises excellence in the hospital’s Paediatric HIV Programme, particularly early infant diagnosis. PCR testing detects HIV in infants within the first few weeks of life, enabling early intervention.

“The award highlights that every infant who tested positive was promptly initiated on ART, significantly improving survival rates and long-term health outcomes.”

Lethuba added that the hospital’s high viral load completion rate is supported by its specialised Virological Failure Clinic, which operates every Tuesday:
“This clinic enables early detection and management of treatment failure, offering comprehensive care and follow-up to patients in need. This recognition is more than just an award – it represents lives saved, illnesses prevented, and a healthier future for our community.

“Our VF Clinic provides a safe and supportive environment that empowers patients to take ownership of their health and manage HIV effectively.”

The Virological Failure Clinic is located within Tambo Memorial Hospital. Patients seeking more information may contact 011 898 8331.
