EMPD shenanigans: Did management look the other way?

Howard Skeens of Sunward Park writes:

It’s amazing how explosive testimony in the Commission of Inquiry into criminality, political interference, and corruption in the criminal justice system can suddenly jolt management in the City of Ekurhuleni into belated ‘remedial’ action.

The Ekurhuleni mayor and his seemingly ineffectual team jumped into action when the EMPD chief was implicated as a supplier of blue lights to a highly controversial business associate.
Yet for years, many residents have known that the EMPD has not been fully functional.

I suppose this should not have come as a surprise, especially when one considers that some senior management appeared oblivious and at some point, complicit in the questionable activities within the department.

There are numerous other incidents where the Ekurhuleni team had their heads in the sand, where a major investigation needed to take place. Two examples stand out: the massive overspending on the office building in Germiston that should have been completed at least four years ago, and the progress on the investigation of the assassination of the senior auditor who uncovered large-scale fraud in a major tender.

When one connects the dots, it becomes easier to understand why no action was taken against EMPD officers who embarked on an illegal strike a few months ago.
Residents are now waiting with guarded anticipation to see whether this newfound urgency will lead to substantial dismissals and real criminal charges against those responsible.
Only then will we know whether the “remedial action” is genuine and not merely more empty political rhetoric.
