Homey Feels – A new township arts festival hits Benoni this December

Homey Feels will also showcase a collective of locally based emerging and established artists, fashion designers, craft brewers, and the best in township culinary delights.

The new township festival, Homey Feels “home is where the art is”, is a brand-new one-day arts experience and festival designed to celebrate South Africa’s rich artistic heritage and the vibrant cultural economy in townships and peri-urban areas that will hit Benoni this December.

The event will feature the best of the City of Ekurhuleni’s artistic talent, live theatre, live music, and deejay sets to get the floor rocking.

Homey Feels is proudly supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s Mzansi Golden Economy and will be hosted on December 19 at the Sibikwa Arts Centre, starting from 11:00.

Headliners:

Theatre: The multi-award-winning live theatre production Yangthola! performed by Ekurhuleni’s Naledi Award-winning actor Alex Sono, who features in SABC 1’s uBettina Wethu. The production is written and directed by award-winning director Mongezi Ntukwana and is presented by Aziye Productions in collaboration with The Art Cave. Yangthola! is set in the heart of South Africa and tells the remarkable tale of a street dweller and recycler. Amidst the gritty urban landscape, the actor transforms discarded trash/treasures into captivating works of art, skillfully merging puppetry with storytelling.

Music: Unique R&B and pop pianist and vocalist Tshepang Dean, boasting a strong catalogue of youthful R&B and pop music, and has worked with industry heavyweights in music production and engineering such as Aron Halevi, who is the producer and founder of Freshlyground.

Immersive Stalls: Homey Feels will also showcase a collective of locally based emerging and established artists, fashion designers, craft brewers, and the best in township culinary delights — the kind that “slaps like Mamzo’s Sunday kos!” including but not limited to Wine by Goat and Kapital Keggs.

The festival organisers, Nhlanhla Jantjie (Artistic Director) and Keitumetse Mbatha (Project and Marketing Director) shared: “We hope people can find this as a home away from home, a call to action to bring back the arts experience to the township economy with local artists. Let’s have a fun time, homeys!”
