After 10 years in the making, Mira finally launches her debut Novel

After 10 years of dreaming, writing and perseverance, Selebete from Ramaphosa starts 2026 with a bang, launching her debut novel, Hearts Under Brittle Bondage.

After a decade of dedication and imagination, 32-year-old Mira Selebete from Ramaphosa has finally achieved what many writers dream of: Launching a debut novel.
The novel is entitled Hearts Under Brittle Bondage.

“Growing up, I spent most of my time in the library, reading everything from fairytales to romance and motivational books. I was fascinated by the power of words and how stories could transport you to another world. Writing became my way of processing my thoughts and emotions, and over time, it turned into a full-blown passion.”

According to Mira, Hearts Under Brittle Bondage is a fictional story inspired by observations during her college years.
“It follows Mirianda, a student navigating a forbidden romance with her lecturer, Tyson. The story spans secret campus affairs, life-changing decisions and an unexpected pregnancy, leading Mirianda to escape to Mozambique.

“I fell in love with Mozambique; the weather, the food, the friendly people. I wanted Mirianda to experience life in a new place while finding freedom and peace.”

Mira Selebete of Reiger Park holds her book.

She said writing the novel took 10 years.
“I had to bring each character to life, giving them distinct personalities and emotions. Writing in the first-person perspective was demanding because I had to step fully into Mirianda’s shoes while shifting between other characters. It was exhausting at times, but incredibly rewarding.”

Mira added that during the process, she also had a baby, which required her full attention, causing her to temporarily put the book on hold.

She cites authors Sandra Brown, Nora Roberts, Nicholas Sparks and Angela Makholwa as her greatest inspirations.
“Meeting Angela at a creative writing workshop left me deeply inspired. I hope my novels one day achieve similar success.”

Beyond writing, Mira draws inspiration from photography, movies, music, poetry and nature walks.
“A single song, a photo, or even a scene in nature, can spark an entire storyline,” she said.

Now, as a debut author, she is celebrating a dream realised.
“Hearts Under Brittle Bondage is more than a book. It’s a proof to perseverance, creativity and following your passion,” she reflected.

She plans to continue writing fiction, explore children’s stories and even pursue film adaptations.
“Dreams may take time, but with dedication and resilience, they can come true,” Mira said, a message that embodies her journey over the last 10 years.
