Stoltz hopes to remain injury-free after stellar run in Springs

She finished second in the women's 15km in a PB 59:27.

Corlize Stoltz exploded onto the Springs Striders Road Race, finishing with blistering speed, a finish that strongly hinted that her injury woes are firmly behind her.

Competing in the women’s 15km, the Boksburg resident powered her way to a consecutive second-place finish, stopping the clock in a vastly improved 59:27 after a hard, uncompromising battle with winner Omuhle Kubheka on the flat and fast course.

Kubheka, a new Pan African Resources AC recruit, clocked 59:03 for her victory. Luca de Waal of Boxer AC finished 30 seconds behind Stoltz, completing a podium where all three finished the race under an hour.

Runner-up Corlize Stoltz with winner Omuhle Kubheka and Luca de Waal, who finished third.

“The race was hard. I felt good for the first 5km. Thereafter, I felt a bit of strain, and it became difficult to maintain my lead. I led for 8km before Omuhle passed me. I pushed and closed the gap at the death. I decided to finish the race on a high,” said Stoltz.

The former Boxer AC athlete, now with Jeppe Quondam, chalked 02:39 off the 01:02:06 she clocked in the same race last year when she finished second behind Kate van Jaarsveld.

“I performed well. I’m happy with my time. I wanted to finish the race under an hour. I managed to improve my time. I feel I’m getting stronger after my struggles with injuries.”

Boosted by the unwavering support and love she’s receiving from her Jeppe teammates, Stoltz feels she has fully recovered after battling with a foot injury for the past two years and is looking forward to a full season without interruptions.

“The body feels great. I feel I have recovered. Training with my Jeppe teammates is easier than on my own. They push me. If I have a setback, they are always there to offer support.

Corlize Stoltz runs on the home straight before crossing the line to finish second behind Omuhle Kubheka.

“Training with them has been absolutely amazing because they are very supportive. They are training for the Comrades Marathon. I want to run the Comrades in the future. They motivate me. I’m happy to be there. It’s a privilege,” she said.

After two years on the sidelines, the Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen alumna will participate in the CGA cross-country season from May, hoping to qualify for the national champs in Pretoria in September.

“I will also run 10km and 15km races and maybe a half-marathon.”
