Stoltz races to podium after recovering from injury

She finished the Springs Striders women's 15km race second in 01:02:06.

Finishing the Springs Striders women’s 15km race on January 19 in second place was a bonus for Boksburg resident Corlize Stoltz after missing almost a year of competitive running because of a foot injury.

A laser-focused Stoltz did not let anything hamper her plans in her first race back since recovering from her injury. She was among the front runners at the start and as soon as she got into her rhythm, everything fell into place.

“My goal at the start was to give my best and to push hard until the end of the race. I wanted to see where my fitness level was. Finishing second was a bonus,” she said.

The Boxer AC runner clocked 01:02:06 to grab the runner-up spot, behind winner Kate van Jaarsveld, who won in 01:00:20. Azelle Grove rounded up the podium 14 seconds behind Stoltz, after crossing the line in 01:02:20.

Running on a flat and fast route with gradual inclines in the second half of the race, Stoltz had her work cut out for her. After months on the sidelines, she was elated to be back doing what she loves.

“I feel good and am happy with my performance. This was my first race in almost a year. I prefer inclines. I loved the route, and it is good to be back racing again,” said Stoltz.

She recently recovered from an injury that kept her from running for almost a year.

The Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen alumna’s preparation was not as fluid as she would have liked. After this performance, in which she averaged 04:08/km, she has put her injury troubles behind her and will work towards qualifying for the ASA 10km championships in November in Bloemfontein.

“I did not train as hard as I wanted to because of a foot injury. But this motivates me to train harder for the next race.

Last year, she was one of the junior athletes who qualified to represent CGA at the national 10km champs after winning the junior women’s category in 38:47 at the provincial championships, which incorporated into the Johnson Crane Marathon.

“I want to do more road races than last year and to qualify to represent CGA at the ASA 10km championships,” Stoltz concluded.
