Online car scam returns: Dawn Park Police issue urgent warning

Scammers are back, targeting buyers on Facebook with fake car listings. Dawn Park SAPS warns residents to stay alert after several victims lost money paying for vehicles that never existed.

Dawn Park SAPS warns that online car scammers are back preying on unsuspecting buyers.

Residents have reported losing money after responding to seemingly legitimate vehicle advertisements on Facebook, only to find that the sellers vanish as soon as they deposit the money.

According to the spokesperson for the police station, Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula, victims typically contact sellers through social media after spotting vehicles listed at attractive prices.

“Once the buyer expresses interest, the scammers persuade him to deposit money to secure the car.
“However, immediately after the payment, the sellers become unreachable, with phones switched off and online profiles disappearing.
“This scam has resurfaced, and people need to stay vigilant.”

Mabula said scammers are becoming more sophisticated, and they rely on buyers rushing into deals without thoroughly checking the details.

She urges anyone considering buying a vehicle online to take the following precautions:
• Research the seller and vehicle: Check the seller’s social media profile, reviews, and ratings.
• Watch for warning signs like newly created accounts or inconsistent information.
• Verify vehicle details: Request the vehicle identification number (VIN) and confirm it against the car’s documents and history report.

• Avoid paying upfront: Do not send money before seeing the car in person.
• Meet in safe, public locations: Arrange inspections and test drives in busy areas where help is nearby in an emergency.

• Inspect the vehicle thoroughly: Look for damage or inconsistencies that may indicate problems.
• Use secure payment methods: Opt for payment platforms that offer buyer protection and maintain a clear record of the transaction.
• Report anything suspicious to the Dawn Park SAPS on 071 675 6940.
