Flourish extends a helping hand to expectant mothers

The programme not only provides pregnancy guidance but also food support and assistance with job applications to help ease stress during motherhood.

Hope, learning and sisterhood filled the Reiger Park Library on February 17 as pregnant mothers gathered for a Flourish session designed to support and empower women during one of the most important journeys of their lives.

The Flourish programme forms part of the Grow Great campaign, which focuses on ensuring that every baby gets the best possible start in life. The initiative highlights the importance of the first 1 000 days from pregnancy until a child turns two, a critical period for brain development, growth and long-term health.

For many of the women who attended, the session was more than just a class; it was reassurance.
“As a pregnant mother, you have so many questions,” one participant, Bernadette Velskut, said.
“You worry if you’re eating the right foods, if your baby is growing well, if you’re doing everything correctly. Being here reminded me that I’m not alone.”

During the 30-minute session, discussions focused on healthy pregnancy, proper nutrition, breastfeeding, bonding with babies and maternal mental wellbeing. Beyond the valuable information shared, many mothers said the emotional support and sense of connection made the greatest impact.

“Sometimes you don’t even realise how stressed you are until you sit with other women who understand.
“Hearing their stories made me feel stronger,” said Velskut.

The session was facilitated by trained host Phindile Sibeko, who understands the uncertainties that come with pregnancy.
“Flourish means growing together, not alone. We are here for mothers every step of the way,” she said.

The programme also offers flexibility, allowing mothers to attend face-to-face or online, ensuring that support remains accessible. At the end of the programme, participants celebrate their journey with a baby shower and graduation ceremony.

Sibeko said they are encouraging more pregnant mothers to join the programme, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

She explained that the support goes beyond the sessions themselves.
“After the session, we also assist mothers with food support and help with job applications.
“We want to ease some of the stress so that they can focus on one of the most important journeys of their lives.”
