Notten sets the pace with ERK marathon triumph

The race formed part of the paddlers' preparation for the Gauteng Marathon championships in June.

Nicholas Notten kicked off the long-distance canoeing season on a high after claiming line honours in the men’s main race at the East Rand Kayak (ERK) Marathon at Homestead Dam on April 19.

The Western Cape paddler powered through the 10-lap, 20km course in 01:36 to secure victory. He was closely pursued by a strong contingent from Emmarentia Dam’s Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, with Sibusiso Chwayi finishing second just a minute later. Youngster Daniel van Eeden rounded off the podium, crossing the line seconds after Chwayi.

Van Eeden also walked away with the U18 title, while Michael John-Robb was the first finisher in the men’s 40–44 veteran category, clocking 01:40. ERK’s Michael Stewart had to settle for fifth place in the master men’s race after completing the course in the same time.

Alison Hay, representing Lowveld Canoe Club, claimed top honours in the women’s race, finishing in 01:53.

In the 10km event, Ruoxi Hao took the win in 56:00, while ERK’s Chris de Bree followed in 01:05. Cathleen van Eeden secured the women’s 10km title in 01:09.

Dabulamanzi’s Asher Wilson dominated the junior guppy race, completing the course in 27:00. Amile Mzolo crossed the line shortly after to take second place.

Gauteng Canoe Union PRO Jennie Dallas said the event formed a key part of preparations for the upcoming provincial and national marathon championships.

“It was a gloomy, overcast day, with the sun occasionally breaking through and reflecting off choppy water. A fairly strong wind made for tough racing conditions,” said Dallas.

“Paddlers are now gearing up for the Gauteng Marathon Championships at Longmere Dam in the Lowveld on June 6 and 7, followed by the South African Marathon Championships in Cape Town from July 3 to 5.
