East Rand Seniors Club a buzzing meeting ground for the elderly

The club meets monthly and is open to new members and guests.

Friendly chatter and warm hugs filled the hall at the Central Methodist Church on May 21 as a group of oldies gathered for the monthly East Rand Seniors Club meeting.

Spoons clinked as members and guests of the 70-strong club took their seats, catching up with valued friends.

Currently in its 30th year, the club serves as a regular meeting ground for residents across Ekurhuleni who are enjoying their golden years.

“The purpose of the club is to offer persons 50 years and older an opportunity to socialise with like-minded individuals,” said club chairperson Brenda Curnow.

“Every month we host speakers who share their life experiences, tales of exotic holidays or display hobbies that add purpose to their lives.

“Most importantly, this is a space for elderly residents to break away from their daily routines and enjoy a nibble and cup of tea with friends.”

Taking the stage, Spike Taylor of Benoni shared pictures and interesting facts about Vietnam, a country he travelled on two occasions.

As an avid bird watcher, Spike and his new bride headed to the tropical Asian country in 2019 to experience the country’s culture and view some of their bird species.

“Vietnam is a sophisticated country, yet governed under communist rule,” he said.

“Spanning 1 650km, from north to south, and boasting 3 444km of coastline, it is a country which has transitioned seamlessly into modern living while remaining true to its rich culture.

“Sadly, the 914 bird species that nest deep inside the dense forests risk extinction due to deforestation to facilitate urbanisation and industrialisation.”

Enthralled by Spike’s presentation and personal retelling of a country that has catapulted itself onto many travellers’ bucket lists, those in attendance hung onto every word as if they were journeying with the intrepid jetsetter.

With a broad smile, Brenda said that through talks like Spike’s the club aims to draw seniors out of the numbing routine that often imprisons the elderly.

“We encourage pensioners to join our ranks, to enjoy the benefits of making new friends and to take a journey with those who have travelled the world, have enjoyed extraordinary experiences and are channelling their creative spirit.”

The East Rand Seniors Club will meet again at the Central Methodist Church, Osborne Street, Boksburg CBD, on June 18 at 10:00.
