Queue marshal shot dead in Benoni CBD in broad daylight
This is the second suspected taxi-related murder in two days.
Police have launched a manhunt for those linked to another suspected taxi-related killing near Lakeside Taxi Rank on June 18 at around 12:30.
According to Benoni SAPS Vispol commander Colonel Sinothi Ndaba, the victim, identified as a queue marshal, was walking near the corner of Kemston Avenue and Swan Street when he was shot in the back of the head.
“According to witnesses, the assailants also fired several shots at the victim after he fell to the ground,” he said.
“We suspect that the incident is related to taxi violence and urge anyone with information to come forward.”
This is the second fatal shooting to be reported in Benoni in two days.
Six people were left dead after a shooting at the N12 Etwatwa off-ramp on June 17, reportedly in the early hours of the morning.
Gauteng SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulw, said that two were found standing next to the side of the road, riddled with bullet holes.
“A Toyota Corolla, branded as Benoni Taxi Association (BTA) Taxi Patrol Unit Toyota Corolla and a white Renault Triber were standing a few meters away from each other. Five occupants of the Renault sustained fatal gunshot wounds,” she said.
“The driver of the vehicle later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Four people escaped unharmed.
The City of Ekurhuleni’s MMC for Roads and Transport Management, Lindiwe Mnguni, condemned the killings.
“The city strongly condemns incidents of this nature and continues to support initiatives led by the Gauteng MEC to promote dialogue, cooperation and peace among taxi associations. These acts of violence undermine these efforts and place the lives of innocent people at risk,” she said.
“Senseless violence undermines ongoing efforts to build a safe, peaceful and stable public transport environment in Ekurhuleni. Violence has no place in our communities.”
Police urge anyone with information that could assist with the investigation to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to log on to the MySapsApp.
