The City of Ekurhuleni has strongly condemned the mass killing of public transport operators at the Holfontein off-ramp towards Etwatwa along the N12.

Five people, including Benoni Taxi Association patrollers, a scholar transport driver, and an e-hailing driver, were gunned down on June 17.
The MMC for Roads and Transport Management, Lindiwe Mnguni, extended the city’s heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the deceased.

“The city strongly condemns incidents of this nature and continues to support initiatives led by the Gauteng MEC to promote dialogue, cooperation and peace among taxi associations. These acts of violence undermine these efforts and place the lives of innocent people at risk,” said Mnguni.

“This senseless violence undermines ongoing efforts to build a safe, peaceful and stable public transport environment in Ekurhuleni. Violence has no place in our communities or in the transport industry,” she added.

The city has called on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Members of the public with any information relating to the shooting are also urged to come forward to assist in the investigation, Mnguni said.
