The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) is encouraging residents who meet the qualifying criteria for its Indigent Support Programme to apply for assistance to help ease the cost of essential municipal services.
The programme provides relief to low-income households by assisting with the costs of basic services, including water, electricity, sanitation and refuse removal.
To qualify, the combined monthly income of all adults living in the household must not exceed R10 478,92.
The municipal account must be in the applicant’s name, and the property must primarily be used for residential purposes and not be sublet. Applicants must also be South African citizens or permanent residents.
The city said child-headed and youth-headed households may also qualify if they meet the necessary requirements and submit the relevant supporting documentation.
Approved applicants may receive up to 10 kilo-litres of free water and sanitation services per month, up to 50 kilowatt-hours of free basic electricity each month, free refuse removal and full property rates relief.
Residents applying for assistance will need to visit their nearest CoE Customer Care Centre with supporting documents, including a South African identity document or proof of permanent residence, a recent municipal statement or prepaid electricity token, proof of household income, three months’ bank statements and any other documents relevant to their circumstances.
Applications will be assessed and verified before approval. The city said approved indigent support is valid for 36 months, after which beneficiaries must reapply if they still require assistance.
The CoE urged qualifying residents to apply and encouraged anyone needing more information to visit their nearest customer care centre or access the city’s official communication platforms.
