Benoni Indians Ball Club player Tatum White says captaining South Africa at the WBSC U15 World Cup in Mexico will be one of the proudest moments of his young baseball career.

White has been entrusted with leading the national U15 side at the prestigious tournament, where South Africa will compete against some of the best young baseball nations in the world.

For the St Dunstan’s College youngster, the captaincy brings both excitement and responsibility.

“When I found out that I had been named captain of the U15 squad to lead the team in Mexico, it was a really special moment, but at the same time I knew that there is a responsibility that comes with it,” White said.

The talented pitcher, who has developed through the Benoni Indians system, believes leadership is not something he has to shoulder alone.

“I have teammates that are just as strong leaders as I am who can help me. But at the end of the day, we are there to represent our country. I am really grateful for the opportunity and I am determined to give everything I have to lead the team in Mexico.”

Representing South Africa on a World Cup stage is particularly meaningful for White, who paid tribute to the people who have supported him throughout his baseball journey.

“It means a huge amount to me and my family. There have been so many people who have supported me throughout my baseball journey, from my family and coaches to all the people who have helped me along the way,” he said.

White hopes to lead by example when he pulls on the green and gold.

“I want to represent South Africa with pride, passion and respect and show how much talent South African baseball has,” he said.

“Most importantly, I want to be the type of captain who leads by example, supports my teammates and never gives up.”

Whatever the outcome in Mexico, White wants the team to return home knowing they gave everything for their country.

South Africa face a daunting Group A campaign, with the young national team drawn alongside baseball powerhouses the Dominican Republic, Japan and Cuba, as well as hosts Mexico and Germany.
