Van Dyk Park karate team shows heart at SA Championships
The national champs were held at Idas Valley Primary School in Stellenbosch.
Chu Jin Karate International’s Gauteng team showed that karate is about more than winning medals, displaying patience, perseverance and sportsmanship at its national championships in Stellenbosch on September 26.
The championships were a long day on the mat, running from approximately 07:30 to 21:00.
Despite the demanding schedule, the team stayed focused and encouraged one another while waiting for their respective divisions, showing the discipline and respect instilled through training.
Among them was the Van Dyk Park-based dojo’s youngest competitor, eight-year-old Jihaan Peer, while dojo head Renshi Nolan Basson also stepped onto the mat in the veterans’ division.

“Their participation highlighted the commitment of both young and experienced karatekas to the sport and their dojo.
“The championships provided the students with an opportunity to put their training to the test and gain valuable experience competing at national level.
“While every competitor’s effort and dedication deserved recognition, the Gauteng team’s conduct throughout the day reflected the values they practise in the dojo, including respect for judges, officials and fellow competitors,” said Basson.
Basson thanked coaches Sempai Nolicia Basson and Sempai Ruben Smith for their guidance and dedication, as well as Khalid Peer for assisting with judging at the championships.
He also acknowledged the parents, families and supporters whose encouragement and unwavering support helped the team throughout the competition.
