Private security and law-enforcement units intercepted what police believe to be an estimated haul of 800kg of dagga in Bardene this morning (September 11).
A 49-year-old suspect was arrested on the scene in Middle Road just after 06:05 when the vehicle he was travelling in was found loaded with large bags of dagga.
According to Millicent Kekana, media liaison officer and spokesperson for the EMPD, patrolling private security noticed a suspicious truck off-loading packages into two waiting vehicles.
“At 05:47, Armour Me A-Tac officers noticed a white two-tonne truck standing in the road, while large sealed packages were being loaded into two Toyota hatchbacks,” she said.
“A call was made for law enforcement backup. EMPD K9 Unit, Gauteng Crime Intelligence and the SAPS Serious Crime Investigation Organisation responded.
“It is reported that the truck driver fled the scene, while the driver of one of the vehicles fled on foot.
“Investigations are underway to establish whether the incident could be related to a larger drug smuggling syndicate,” she said.
“We are grateful for the prompt response by alert private security members as well as that of local law enforcement.”
