BAC’s Silale and Mokgola to represent CGA at national 10km champs

They are part of a 31-athlete CGA team that will compete in the event.

Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) runners Christina Silale and Isaac Mokgola are delighted to have been selected to represent Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) at the ASA 10km Championships in Potchefstroom on October 17.

They form part of a 31-athlete CGA team that will contest the national showpiece, which will be incorporated into the Let’s Go Potch! 10km race at JB Marks Oval.

Silale, a Wattville resident, will compete in the master women’s 50-59 category alongside Phyllis de Fouw, while Mokgola will line up in the veteran men’s 40-49 race with Mandla Mahlangu, Omo Hlungwane and Williams Croyden.

Christina Silale crosses the line to win the women’s marathon at the MNS Attorneys Carnival City Marathon. She’s with her coach David Gamede.

Silale never expected to wear the CGA colours again after last representing the province several years ago, when she was still competing in the veterans category.

“This means a lot to me. I represented CGA twice when I was in my 40s running for Rainbow AC. I didn’t think I would get another opportunity again. I’m 50 but I’m still going strong, pushing and working hard,” she said.

The two-time Comrades Marathon silver medallist heads to Potchefstroom in excellent form after finishing second in her category in 41:25 at the Absa Run Your City Joburg 10K, securing her qualification for the national championships.

“I thank God for everything. He made me realise that age is just a number. I would also like to express my gratitude to Coach David Gamede for his unwavering support, as well as the BAC family.”

Mokgola, meanwhile, secured his place in the CGA team after clocking 34:09 at the Masingita Mall 4-in-1 race, where he won the veteran men’s category.

“Being selected to represent CGA at the championships is one of the most meaningful achievements of my athletics career. To me, CGA represents hard work, discipline, growth and the opportunity to compete alongside some of the best athletes in the province,” he said.

The Thembisa resident, who has a 10km best of 32:41, said he would represent CGA and BAC with pride.

“Wearing the CGA colours is a source of immense pride because it represents not only my personal achievement, but also the support from my club, coaches, family and community.

“I am proud to carry the CGA colours and will give my very best to represent our province with honour, commitment and determination,” said Mokgola.

The CGA team will be led by senior men Kwanele Lefa, Fernando Macavele, Mokaedi Pheko and Benoni Northerns’ Mpumelelo Mokoena, while Zanele Maisa, Samantha Coetzer, Maria Shai and Kebegile Motshabi will compete in the senior women’s race.
