Salzwedel and Steenkamp win Tommy Malone Memorial Race

The race was held in honour of the 1966 Comrades Marathon winner, Tommy Malone, one of the founding members of the Boksburg Athletic Club.

Trevor Salzwedel lived up to pre-race expectations to clinch the men’s 15km title at the Tommy Malone Memorial Road Race at Boksburg Stadium on October 11, while Jolandi Steenkamp claimed the women’s title.

In ideal running conditions, with cloud cover following overnight rain, the race started at a blistering pace as experienced veteran runners looked to capitalise on the absence of the province’s top athletes in the distance.

Salzwedel, of Greenstone Hill AC, took control after 8km, having bided his time early on. With little response from the chasing pack, he pulled away and stormed into the finishing straight at Boksburg Stadium before crossing the line in a personal best of 52:44.

“I achieved a personal best, which was my goal. The race was good; not many hills,” he said.

Germiston Callies Harriers’ Asaf Lebotsa finished second in 54:09, 01:25 behind the winner, while Ivory Park AC’s Ziyavuya Thomas completed the podium in 55:07.

In the women’s race, Boxer AC’s Steenkamp proved a class apart despite running on tired legs after winning the veteran women’s 40–49 category at the Parys Crater Street Mile a day earlier in 05:46.

The Brakpan resident clocked 01:06:48 to secure the title, finishing ahead of Jeppe Quondam duo Kirsten Nolan and Monique Muller, who placed second and third in 01:07:16 and 01:08:37, respectively.

“I’m very tired but very happy. I entered this morning; it was unplanned. The conditions and route were good,” said Steenkamp.

Both winners also claimed the veteran titles in their respective races. Qhubeka AC’s Reuben Moraba (59:22) and Cornea Esterhuizen were the first master man and woman to cross the finish line.

Benoni Northerns’ Jane Nielson won the grandmaster women’s 60–69 category, while Rand Road Warriors’ Simon Evans claimed the men’s title in 1:07:09.

In the 7.5km fun run, Brakpan twins Caleb and Megan-Ann Roberts also celebrated victories. Caleb won the men’s race, while Megan-Ann claimed the women’s title.

Organised by Boksburg Athletic Club, the race honoured one of its founding fathers, Tommy Malone, who won the 41st Comrades Marathon in 1966. A respectable field turned out to pay tribute to the Comrades double gold medallist and eight-time silver medallist.

Known as the Flying Scot, Malone passed away in 2019. He remains synonymous with the dramatic finish of the 1967 Comrades Marathon, when Manie Kuhn beat him by inches after he stumbled near the finish line, producing one of the race’s most iconic photographs.
